Tippmann's most popular markers are the 98 series of markers. Originally introduced in 1997 as the MODEL 98 then subsequently changed to the 98 CUSTOM and then to the 98 CUSTOM PLATINUM SERIES they quickly became a very popular gun – probably the most popular marker out there. They are noted for being rugged, dependable and upgradeable and are not expensive.

The Models

The 98 Custom comes in two basic models – the 98 Custom and the 98 Custom PRO. They both have the same internals but the PRO model has some extra features – notably the PRO has a double trigger, a drop forward and a longer, 11 inch, two piece barrel.

Each of these models comes in either basic and ACT (Anti-Chop Technology) versions. The ACT versions offer a big advantage over the basic. The Tippmann ACT detects a ball that is only part way into the breach of the marker and it will prevent the bolt from going forward. This eliminates a problem for paintballers, especially those that are shooting rapidly, because the basic model cannot prevent the bolt from going forward and cutting a partially loaded ball in half. For this reason, we highly recommend the ACT version of the 98 Custom and the 98 Custom PRO.

98's have come in several finishes over the years. Black remains the most popular color and digital camo versions are available. You may still see nickel versions but they are no longer manufactured.

Trigger Options

Several options are available for the current versions of the 98. The first option you might consider is a double trigger. This allows the player to use two fingers to access the trigger and allows the player to shoot more rapidly. If you get a double trigger be sure to get one with a trigger guard that fits around the trigger as the trigger guard of the single trigger will not fit around the double.

A second option that is available for the 98 is the R/T (Response Trigger). This is a fun trigger that is pneumatically operated (no batteries needed) and, once you get used to it, will allow you to rapidly fire your gun – nearly at automatic speeds. The R/T works off of the exhaust gases from the valve and as you pull the trigger back the gun will fire and then a small piston will push the trigger forward. Again as you pull back the gun fires and the trigger is pushed forward. With a little practice and adjustments to the trigger, you can get the pressure that you exert on the trigger to just offset the forward push of the R/T and the marker will fire very rapidly – up to 15 balls per second.

The final option to consider is the electronic trigger. This trigger is operated by a 9 volt battery and offers the player five firing modes – semi automatic, full automatic (up to 15 balls per second), auto response, 3-shot burst, and turbo.

NOTE: Not all triggers are available for all types of 98's. For example, the electronic trigger is not available for 98 markers with serial numbers earlier than 893000.

Barrels

Please read our Tech Tips about barrels for general barrel information.

The barrel that comes with the 98 Custom is a very basic barrel which is 8.5 inches long. Probably the best and first upgrade to your gun should be a better barrel. It will improve accuracy and can quiet your gun compared to the stock barrel on the 98.

One option available for the 98 Custom and Custom PRO is the flatline barrel. This barrel is the one of the few barrels that will actually add range (about 100 feet additional) to your shot.
